Life University Leadership Weekend - Isaias Vera

Hello, my name is Isaias Vera. I attend Ridgevue High School and am currently a senior graduating in 2025. Since entering high school, my goal has always been to earn a scholarship for a trip. When I received the FHLA scholarship to go to Atlanta, Georgia, I felt immense pride because it meant that my hard work and involvement in school had been recognized by people I admire, such as Luis Caloca and Rick Godina. My peers and I immediately began fundraising for the trip. We sold tamales, donuts, and raffle tickets, and also hosted a car show and a car wash. These events allowed my peers and me to bond before the trip.

Not only was I excited to visit a different state across the country, but I was also thrilled about my first plane ride. I remember the night before the trip, I couldn’t sleep due to the excitement and butterflies in my stomach. At the three different airports, it was memorable to see how everyone is traveling with a purpose, much like me and my peers on this trip. I recall meeting a flight attendant whose son was from Idaho and was currently fighting a fire there. I thought to myself, “What a small world we live in.”

Arriving in Atlanta was a culture shock; people from all over the world were there. Moving from a small town like Caldwell, Idaho, to Atlanta, Georgia, made me realize that I am meant to live in a big city because I loved the diversity in Atlanta. Not only was Atlanta beautiful, but so was Life University. The university was stunning both inside and out. Inside, the spirit of the students and directors created a welcoming atmosphere. Outside, the surrounding trees and nature were breathtaking. In other words, Life University was truly filled with LIFE.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was talking to two people from Sweden. It was a fascinating experience because I had never met someone from a country other than Mexico. Our conversation about their country and its differences from the U.S. was intriguing. I was also amazed by their accent. From this experience, I learned a valuable lesson: it is okay to initiate a conversation with someone. Starting the conversation can spark meaningful connections. I also learned that achieving your goals requires determination because the path to your desires is often neither clear nor simple.

Overall, we share a common connection—to learn more. I want to thank Dr. Javier Del Hoyo for allowing me and my team to go on this trip and explore the options available to us after high school. I also want to thank my advisors, Rick Godina, Mrs. Ramirez, Yuki Longest, and Hugo Mendoza, who cared for us as if we were their own children. To my FHLA team, I had a wonderful summer filled with memories with all of you. Without your support, this trip would not have been possible. Thank you, Luis Caloca, for choosing me for this opportunity. This trip means a lot to me and marks one of my first opportunities to experience my LIFE choices.
